Promoting itself under a "Live Large. Think Big" slogan, Dallas -- long known as the Big D -- blazed 1800s beginnings on big dreams with Texas-sized can-do attitude. From the 1907 opening of Neiman Marcus downtown to a 1930 oil strike 100 miles east of town fueling status as a center for the drilling industry, Dallas has spurred entrepreneurial spirit, evidenced in more recent decades with larger than life personalities like presidential candidate Ross Perot and cosmetics queen Mary Kay Ash. A low point in city morale came with the Nov. 22, 1963 shooting death of President John F. Kennedy at Dealey Plaza, now a memorial landmark preserved along with the Texas School Book Depository where assassin Lee Harvey Oswald lurked. Driving recent downtown renaissance as a major business and entertainment hub are the West End Historic District and the 60-acre Dallas Arts District, home to the Dallas Museum of Art and the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center. Sister city Fort Worth -- where the "West Begins," according to the late humorist Will Rogers -- also packs punch as the "museum capital of the Southwest" with a line-up ranging from the Texas Civil War Museum to the National Cowgirl Museum & Hall of Fame, the Cattle Raisers Museum and the Stockyards Museum. With Dallas - Fort Worth International Airport hosting some 2,300 flights per day, Dallas - Fort Worth lodging accommodations range from family owned motels to luxury hotels, some with historic appeal.
